What is a cataract?
A cataract occurs when the eye's natural lens becomes cloudy. This cloudiness leads to blurry or foggy vision, similar to looking through a dirty window. In a healthy eye, the lens is clear and transparent.
As a cataract develops, proteins accumulate on the lens, making it increasingly difficult to see clearly. Aging is the most common cause of cataracts, but they can also develop due to other factors such as corticosteroid use, diabetes, and inadequate sun protection, among others.
If you notice any changes in your vision, it is important to inform your primary eye care provider. These symptoms are not exclusive to cataracts, so a professional assessment is necessary to determine the underlying cause of your visual changes.
Do I need cataract surgery?
If your eye doctor diagnoses you with cataracts, you might think that you need cataract surgery right away. However, this is not typically the case for most patients.
You can live with cataracts for many years before surgery becomes necessary. Most cataract surgeons recommend the procedure only if your cataracts interfere with your ability to perform everyday tasks.
