In March 2005, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Alcon Laboratories AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL. The ReSTOR® lens provides our Sacramento patients with a full range of vision following cataract surgery and first became available to international surgeons in 1994. Since then, over 21 million lenses have been implanted.
During the procedure, the ReSTOR® intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted through a small cut in the cornea, typically the same incision used to remove the cataract if cataract eye surgery was just performed. Once inserted, the lens gently unfolds and is set into position.
In the FDA’s clinical study, 80 percent of patients receiving the ReSTOR® IOL reported that they never wear glasses for any activities. They can read a book, work on the computer, and drive a car with increased freedom from glasses. In fact, patients were so pleased with their vision, nearly 94 percent of them said they would have the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL implanted again if given the choice.
